Knives are tools with a cutting edge or blade, usually attached to a handle or hilt. They play an important role in our daily lives, from the utensils we use to eat with, to the carving knife that helps make Thanksgiving special, to the knife that is your most trusted companion during adventures in the backcountry.

Olight has launched dozens of Oknives over the years, and there are about a dozen Oknives for sale on our website right now. If you’re interested in learning more about our knives, read on!

Four Ways to Classify Folding Knives

How Does It Open?

There are several ways to open folding knives, including a nail nick, thumb stud, thumb hole, and flipper. Most users have distinct preferences, so let’s see how to differentiate Oknives by opening methods!

1. Flipper

                Freeze 2                        Gaur                       Parrot                         Splint

              Zilla                   Drever                       Mini Drever                      Mettle

2. Thumb Hole

                Splint

3. Thumb Stud

               Beagle                         Drever                  Mini  Drever

                 Rubato                    Rubato 3

How Does It Lock?

We know that a locking mechanism adds extra safety and functionality to your EDC knife, and it’s best to choose the locking method which is smoothest to use and most natural for you. There are two Oknife locking methods for you to choose from.

1. Liner Lock

       Freeze 2                       Beagle                          Gaur                         Parrot

         Splint                         Zilla                         Drever                   Mini Drever

2. Rail Lock

        Rubato                      Rubato 2                       Rubato 3

3. Button Lock

           Mettle

Materials

The materials used in making knives, particularly the blade steel and the handle material, make a big difference in your user experience. It’s always worth it to spend some time choosing your blade steel and handle material carefully.

Blade Shape

There are so many blade shapes! Drop-Point, sheepsfoot, clip-point, tanto, harpoon.... those are just some of the more common blade shapes in the current market. Let’s review the many blade shapes of Oknives and choose your favorite!

1. Sheepsfoot

            Gaur                         Parrot                       Rubato 2

            Zilla                        Drever                      Mini Drever

2. Drop Point

         Freeze 2                    Rubato 3                      Mettle

3. Tanto

          Ratel                         Rubato

4. Harpoon

             Beagle

This was an amazing breakdown of the oknives & the different types. This should be printed and mailed with every oknife as a booklet. Very useful & informative 👍.

I am attracted to the Rubato3’s size, drop point blade, and thumb lock. Plus, it is a beautifully designed knife. Well done Olight.

I really like the button lock on the Mettle. For me it’s the easiest mechanism to close and the size is good for EDC.

I liked the Rubato 3, and the Nightclaw looks pretty cool too, that might be the first O knife I get. I’m very curious to see where this is going to go and evolve!

Some really important things that were left out of the post are blade size and handle shape. However the rail lock family seems interesting to me.

Love the variety of knives that Olight is making. I think my favorite (currently) is the Rubato 2. Love the size, the rail lock, and the sheepsfoot blade shape!
